Convert Nikon NEF RAW photos to JPG — Free, No Upload, In-Browser.
Open RAW ConverterNEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's proprietary RAW format, used across the full Z-mount mirrorless and F-mount DSLR lineup — from the Z6 III to the D850 to entry-level Nikon bodies. NEF files contain the unprocessed sensor data at 12 or 14 bits per channel, which is great for post-processing but makes them large (15 to 50 MB), unreadable by most apps, and impossible to share on social media, email, or print services. Converting NEF to JPG gives you a compact, universally-compatible photo while applying the correct Nikon camera white balance so the result matches what you saw through the viewfinder.
NEF files encode 12 or 14 bit sensor data with Nikon's proprietary white balance and picture control data. omnikitbolt applies the embedded camera white balance during RAW decode, then maps the full-range sensor data to an 8 bit JPG through tone mapping. At quality 90 to 95 the output looks excellent for all display and print purposes. Keep your NEF originals if you want to adjust exposure, shadows, or colour grading in Lightroom or Capture NX-D.
| Format | File Size | Quality | Compatibility | Use Case |

Does converting NEF to JPG lose quality?
Converting from 14 bit RAW to 8 bit JPG reduces editing latitude, but the visible photo looks excellent at quality 90 to 95. omnikitbolt applies the Nikon camera white balance during decode, so the output looks natural — not flat. Retain your NEF originals for future re-development.
Is it safe to convert my NEF files in a browser?
Yes. omnikitbolt uses a WebAssembly build of libraw that runs entirely inside your browser. Your NEF files are never uploaded to any server. The conversion is fully local and private, even if you disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
Which Nikon cameras produce NEF files?
Almost every Nikon camera that shoots RAW uses NEF: the Z-mount mirrorless series (Z6 III, Z7 II, Z8, Z9, Zf, Zfc), the F-mount DSLRs (D3500, D5600, D750, D850, D6), and many older Nikon digital cameras. The Nikon Z9 also offers a compressed NEF variant (NREC); omnikitbolt decodes both.
Can I convert multiple NEF files at once?
Yes. Drop a batch of NEF files on the RAW Converter and download all the JPGs in a ZIP. The free plan handles up to 20 files at a time; Pro handles up to 500.
Why does my NEF look different in omnikitbolt vs Nikon NX Studio?
Nikon NX Studio applies Nikon's proprietary Picture Control profiles (Standard, Vivid, Neutral, etc.) and in-camera noise reduction on top of the RAW data. omnikitbolt uses libraw with camera white balance and standard tone mapping, which may produce slightly different contrast or saturation compared to Nikon's own software. For professional editing, always develop NEF files in your preferred RAW editor and use omnikitbolt for quick sharing conversions.
